Frank James Carroll, aged 93, of Tinton Falls, NJ, passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, in Neptune, NJ, after a short illness.
Frank James Carroll, aged 93, of Tinton Falls, NJ, passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, in Neptune, NJ, after a short illness. A wake will be held from 1 to 3 pm on Sunday, August 27, 2023, at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Rte. 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall, NJ. A private funeral Mass will be held at St. Catharine’s Church in Spring Lake, NJ.
Frank was born to Dr. Frank J. and Mary Carroll (Gordon) on July 23, 1930, in New York, NY. Buddy, as he was known to his friends, grew up in Washington Heights. He attended All Hallows High School (Class of 1948) and Fordham University (Class of 1952). He played baseball and basketball at Fordham and remained a lifelong Ram, attending football games in the Bronx and following the basketball team to the very end. He was a member of the U.S. Navy Reserve during his last two years at Fordham, followed by two years in the U.S. Army, including a stint in Japan.
Frank raised his family in River Edge, NJ, where he lived for 40 years. Most of his working years were spent as a Special Agent with the U.S. Customs Service, from which he retired in 1985. He coached his girls’ softball team, the Sparrows, and took his family to Ocean Beach, NJ, in the summers. After retirement, he spent time in Hobe Sound, FL, before settling in Spring Lake Heights, NJ. Ever the athlete, Frank developed his love of golf later in life and was an active member of the Fairway Mews Golf Club. He possessed a selfless devotion to faith, family and friends. He will be remembered for his keen intelligence and quick wit, which he lovingly directed at his children and grandchildren.
Frank is survived by his two daughters Elizabeth (Robert) and Catherine (Evan), and his five grandchildren, Jack, Leo, Morgan, Lucas and Robbie. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Bernadette (Timoney), and his sister Anne (White).
