Michael Patrick Downie ("Mike"), 62, passed away on January 29, 2023 after a valiant two-year battle with glioblastoma multiforme, one of the most aggressive types of brain cancer.
Mike was born on January 14, 1961 in Niagara Falls, NY to Raymond Downie and Mary Ann Downie.
Raymond, Mary Ann and their four children relocated from Niagara Falls to San Diego, CA in 1968. A few years later, they moved to Orange County, CA. Mike had many fond memories of growing up in Southern California and experiencing 1970s surf culture. Mike attended California State University, Long Beach and graduated in 1983 with a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice.
He began his career in federal law enforcement in 1985, when he accepted a position as an Agent with US Border Patrol. He was assigned to Carrizo Springs, TX. Two years later, he accepted a position as a Special Agent with US Customs Service, based in San Francisco, CA.
While living in San Francisco, Mike met his wife, Pat. Mike and Pat married in 1989, and soon after, had three children together. The family of five lived in Petaluma, CA until 2002, when a new job opportunity resulted in a family relocation to Carlsbad, CA.
Mike accepted a position in San Diego, CA as a Supervisory Special Agent with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. He was a Task Force Commander for the San Diego Maritime Task Force where he directed multi-agency maritime drug trafficking investigations. He later became the supervisor for the San Diego Asset Identification and Removal Group (AIRG) where he led asset forfeiture investigations in various cases including commercial fraud, drug trafficking, money laundering, human smuggling and immigration fraud. He excelled in his duties and consistently achieved superior performance over the course of 13 years working in San Diego.
Mike was extremely passionate about his work. He retired in 2016 but continued his involvement in investigations post-retirement by working as an independent contractor, Senior Financial Investigator for the US Drug Enforcement Administration, and later as a consultant with West Coast AML Services.
Mike enjoyed everything mother nature had to offer. As an Assistant Scoutmaster for BSA Troop 748-Carlsbad, he enjoyed the expeditions of the High Adventure group to Mt. Whitney, the Narrows in Zion, UT, the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim, the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, NM just to name a few. Often surfing off the coast of Carlsbad, fishing for salmon in Bodega Bay, or perhaps diving for lobster off Santa Cruz Island, his love for the ocean was like no other. An avid surfer, fisherman, diver, as well as a camper, hiker, backpacker, cyclist and kayaker, Mike enjoyed the outdoors with zest and vigor.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Pat, daughters, Hannah and Catalina and son, Thomas; father, Raymond Sr., brothers Christopher (Margaret), Bob, Jon (Karen), Clifford (Christine) and Raymond Jr., and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ann Downie (Lally).
Funeral and burial services will be held on February 16, 2023 at the Old Mission San Luis Rey cemetery – 4050 Mission Road, Oceanside, CA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mike's honor to the Catalina Island Conservancy, an organization Mike felt strongly about.
