It is with great sadness that we inform you that ACHSIA South Florida Chapter member Miles Sonn, a retired US Customs and ICE Special Agent who was currently a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Inspector/Special Agent, passed away unexpectedly this weekend while at his home in Parkland, FL.
Miles started his federal law enforcement career in 1977 with the US Border Patrol in Chula Vista, CA. Afterwards he saw a variety of assignments with INS including being an Immigration Inspector at San Ysidro, CA, and a Criminal Investigator in Los Angeles which included assignments at the 1980 Mariel Boatlift in South Florida and the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.
In 1986, he became a US Customs Service Special Agent at SAC Miami where he was an investigative workhorse who leveraged his gregariousness nature to bring success to US Customs and its many of its law enforcement partners investigating narcotics smuggling and money laundering in and beyond South Florida. He also saw an assignment at the FBI Miami Joint Terrorism Task Force where he investigated illicit terrorism finance.
After his retirement in 2006, Miles continued as an Adjunct Professor at Broward College teaching Health and Wellness, and he worked in a variety of positions including as a Field Analyst with USCIS and TDY to ICE ERO, a contract Law Enforcement Professional 1 (LEP1) with the US Army in Afghanistan, as a Special Agent with the State of Florida Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco, and most recently as an Inspector/Special Agent with the FDLE.
Miles is survived by his wife Rene, son Michael (HSI Special Agent) and daughter Mallory (BATF-E Special Agent). Miles' father was a NY Corrections Officer, his uncle Eddie was a NYPD Detective and his brother Paul was a NYPD Officer.
Funeral services will be on Friday, December 20, 2024 at 10:30AM at the Star of David, 7701 Bailey Road, North Lauderdale, FL 33068. Read more on Dignity.com.
